We were very fortunate that our first experience with helpers went amazingly well.
Johnny and Rox arrived in October 2013 and stayed with us for 6 weeks. After 31 years of being the only Rox I knew, life suddenly got very confusing! Being the same age and having similar interests, we all quickly became good friends and had a really great time together.
At this point the most important project was getting our vegetable garden up and running. An old flower bed was cleared out and we decided to do some experimentation with eco-friendly fencing. Johnny and Rox used our abundance of fallen sticks to weave a round fence with a great rustic look. Mark later made a gate for it using more sticks and just a few strategically placed nails to hold it all together.
The fence was surprisingly sturdy and held up for about 2.5 years until the horses leaned too hard on it and broke some of the upright poles. It was recently dismantled and the sticks went into our kindling collection. I’ll tell you all about the new fence in another post coming soon.
After living here for so many years, we had come to take everything the area had to offer for granted and busy weekends left us little time to enjoy it anyway. The arrival of Johnny and Rox freed up our time and presented a welcome opportunity to look at the local area with fresh eyes. In our new found enthusiasm to reacquaint ourselves with the sights, we visited the beach and the Shoalhaven Zoo, hiked up Tabletop Mountain, trekked out to Fitzroy Falls, and spent half a day getting hot and dusty playing Laser Tag at Ulladulla Funland. Good times!
